Burren Ireland information - Cahermacnaughten Stone Fort

Cahermacnaughten home of the O'Davoren Law School in the Burren

This fort was home to the famous O'Dabhoireann Law School. The O'Dabhoireann's were the hereditary legal family of the Burren. From their base in Cahermacnaughten they helped to maintain the Brehon tradition in the west of Ireland.

The Brehon law was the ancient legal system of Ireland. The O'Dabhoireann's appear to have possesed an extensive collection of legal manumscripts detailing the many precepts of this system. The are attribbuted with the compilation of one of the most important ancient Irish Law manuscripts still in existence refered to as Egerton 88. This text is of great historical significance because apart from the wealth of legal detail it also contains extensive notes on life in the Burren and at Cahermacnaughten in the 1600's

The fact that these manuscripts have been found confirms that some of the Burren ringforts were occupied until late medieval times.
