Aran Islands visitor & tourist information
The Aran Islands are located just off the west coast of the Burren. You can reach them by taking a day trip from Doolin The locals here are int he main speakers of the Irish language and in the summer scholars come from far and wide to immerse themselves in the spoken language.
The Aran island group is made up of 3 islands Inis Mor (literally translate appropriately as the big Island). Inis Meain the middle or medium island and Inis Oirr the smallest of the 3 islands. The ferry from Doolin (walk on passangers only no Cars.) takes about 35 minutes and it's a pleasant trip on a calm day. If you intend to stay your best to book somewhere to spend the night in advance as the islands are often busy in summertime.
If you have time on your way back Caherconnell Stone Fort in the heart of the Burren (below) is an interesting and unique chance to examine mainland Burren life past and present.
Lastly if your interested in the history and archaeology of the Aran islands you will probably enjoy this book The Burren And The Aran Islands: Exploring The Archaeology Carleton Jones
